Redpeg, Copper and a little penis…

Here’s the lowdown on Redpeg Eco Studio founder Gabrielle McGrath… designer and maker of most excellent eco conscious jewellery…

Artist and founder of Redpeg Eco Studio, Gabrielle McGrath is one talented creative! Gab attended The National Art School, majoring in sculpture and she’s in her element creating environmentally sustainable art to adorn the body and the earth in her gorgeous studio on the far south coast of NSW.

“One day, (about 8 years ago) I brought some silver wire and silver sheet and set about working with it in the same way I would if making a sculpture……. I’ve slowly built up a cache of tools and have taught myself how to use them. I’m sure some silversmiths would have a fit, if they saw me at work. Ever the heavy handed sculptor! I love Red and I’m fond of Pegs, simple, aesthetic, timeless,  little objects that they are. Also, I should tell you that a peg in jewellery terms is  a small wooden extension that clamps on your work bench to make it easier for you to saw and drill on…….”

Redpeg and ZoeO…

At a local exhibition opening last year for International Women’s Day, Gab made a stunning neck piece out of recycled one cent coins – it took my breath away and got me thinking…

Exhibition piece for International Women’s day.”How to make one dollar and seven cents look a million bucks”. Cold forged copper one cent pieces. Gorgeous Gab in her studio + outside her studio!

I asked Gab if she would be interested in making an exclusive range of every day wearable copper jewellery that I could offer in the Zoe O studio shop – Eight months on and it has grown into a regular gig where Gab comes up with new recycled copper designs and I get to support a local artist, offer a contemporary recycled eco product and wear her awesome earrings and pendants too!

 Something we found out…

Gab was featured on the Humans of Sapphire Coast FB feed a while back so I just had to share this snippet…

“My earliest childhood memory is the top of my finger being chopped off in a door-slamming incident with my siblings. It has no feeling and sometimes when I’m working I can smell burning flesh and realise it’s my finger…that kinda looks like a little penis.”
